Ócsa, Premonstratensian monastery
The monastery of Ócsa first appears in the written sources in 1235. The date of the foundation and building works of the Premonstratensian church can be further defined based on the stylistic contexts of the standing remains and the carved ornaments, especially the ones in the chancel. The lack of refinement of the higher placed elements, the inconsistent forms of structure and the missing vaulting suggests the church as incomplete. The last section of the nave being cut off by a wall points to the same suggestion. A possible date of the foundation is around the year 1200, under the eight-year-long reign of King Emeric. The style of the sanctuary supports this date, moreover, the sudden death of Emeric in 1204 and the enthronement of his antagonistic brother, Andrew II can explain the discontinuation of the building works, as well as the resulting stopgap measures.
